Frequently Asked Questions
What choices do I have for energy supply?
Ontario’s natural gas market was deregulated in October 1985. Since then, you have the option to purchase your natural gas from either your utility or any gas marketer licensed by the Ontario Energy Board.
You have the option to choose a gas marketer as an alternative to your utility. By doing this, you can choose from any of the various rate plans offered by the marketer. These plans can include fixed-rate plans with either short- or long-term contracts or other types of structured-rate products. Plus, you will have the ability to know your price for the duration of the plan. There are no fluctuations.
You also have the option of purchasing your natural gas from your utility. Utilities cannot offer a fixed price. When you purchase gas from your utility, you will be charged a variable rate, which is based on the utility’s cost of buying the gas, plus administrative costs. So, utility rates can fluctuate, depending on if the cost of doing business is more or less than you have been charged. If the cost is more than you have been paying, you will be charged the difference, either in a lump sum or spread out over a period of time.
Why would I choose a natural gas marketer?
A natural gas marketer provides choices. You can choose between rate plans that can be tailored to suit your needs. Select a steady fixed price for easy monthly budgeting or a dynamic flexible rate to capitalize on market fluctuations.
You also have the option to choose between various contract lengths to give you the security or the flexibility for the length of time you feel comfortable.
